We awoke late, due primarily to my oversleeping, although the beds were still giving me back problems. After eating the continental breakfast, we packed and departed. The journey through Grand Teton Park took almost an hour, with the roads rapidly deteriorating as we entered Yellowstone proper, via the south entrance. On our way in, we spotted bison grazing in the distance, and moose grazing nearby, that had attracted a throng of people, who had pulled their vehicles over, making it difficult to drive by. Once inside the park, we were afforded a spectacular view of Lewis Canyon, due primarily to fires that had ravaged the park in 1988, leaving much of what would have previously be obscured by forest open to the naked eye. It took us almost another hour to reach our lodge, on the north shore of the gigantic Yellowstone Lake. Arriving around 1 pm, we found that they were still cleaning our room, so we went out for a short hike nearby. The path was littered with bison feces, and the tracks of the animals were apparently, although not the animals themselves. The temperature was good inland, but blisteringly cold and windy along the lake shore. Returning from our mile-long hike, we detoured briefly to get a look at what we thought were trumpetter swans, but upon closer inspection, turned out to be white pelicans. Returning to our hotel, we spotted a gigantic buffalo grazing not 100' from it. We took some pictures of the animal, which seemed quite oblivious to nearby humans, including the cooking staff which walked by it as they left their dormatories for the hotel. Pulling into the hotel, we found that even a 3 pm, our rooms weren't ready. Our dinner reservations were at 6:30 pm, somewhat limiting our options, however, we headed down the road to West Thumb Geyser basin, which we had passed earlier on the way in. Once at the basin, we walked among the many bubbling pools, on a raised wooden walkway. The geyser activity extended out into the lake proper, and the pools bubbled and were lined with crystals, yellow (Sulfur), white (Titanium), red (iron), and green (copper.) Upon our short walk there, we returned to the hotel at roughly 5 pm, and found our rooms ready at last. We checked in, and, after a brief rest, attended dinner at 6:30 pm. Activities after dinner were somewhat limited, there is no TV in the rooms here, and the only hotel- provided entertainment was classical piano music in the main hall. We retired to our rooms and spent the rest of the evening planning our trips for the coming days, and reading.
