Another Austin morning, another bunch of Round Rock Doughnuts. We set off for Longhorn Caverns and made it in time for the noon tour. Accompanied by a horde of screaming children, we toured the cave, which included a spectacular dolomite section. We departed the cave and went to Enchanted Rock, which was overflowing with people (the weather had improved,) and reserved a primative camping spot at a location known as Buzzard's Roost. Before we went there to set up camp, we climbed the secondary dome, and came back down. After our "warm-up" we loaded our gear and set off on the 1.5 mile hike to our campsite, which proved a little more problematic than might have been anticipated as the trail was quite rough (Though fortunately level.) We arrived, claimed the closest campsite, and set up. Shortly after we arrived, a huge group came in and set up camp, they would spend much of the night ambushing each other on the trail to the restroom and keeping everyone else awake with their screaming. Our camp set up and sunset approaching, we donned our caving lights and went on a dusk hike, returning some time after nightfall, after a hike of roughly 3-4 miles round trip. We set up our single burner portable stove, which functioned nicely, although it sounded like a firehose, and heated soup for dinner. As we were finishing our dinner and getting read to go to bed, two girls came along the trail. They carried no light and inquired if this was the way to the parking lot. It was not, and they were lost, after dark, without a light source (As I would notice later, they'd apparently also fallen in the stream and were soaked.) I gave them a mini maglight and offered to accompany them to the fork they made the mistake at, as I needed to rinse out our dishes at the stream there. They followed me back, but it became obvious that they would have serious problems negotiating the rest of the trail with the tiny light I gave them, so I accompanied them the rest of the way back, which was slow as they were quite tired. Back at the parking lot, I was about to depart, they hailed me down again and I ended up giving their vehicle a jump. As I finished that, they circled in their now functioning car once more to profess they didn't know how to get out of the park. I gave them directions and began my hike back alone. The dear and other animals weren't frightened of humans at all, and I encountered quite a few by the stream as I hiked back. I retrieved my pots, washing them, and returned to camp, to explain to Sugar and Sparky where I'd been.
