January 1st, 2016

We arose early and departed, originally planning to stop by a breakfast place called Strawberry Fare, which turned out to be closed for the holidays. We ended up
stopping at McDonalds, where I ingested the "Massive McMuffin" which consisted of an egg, two sausage patties, and a slice of canadian bacon. We set out through
Arthur's Pass, stopping occasionally for photographs. The accident from yesterday had been cleared, leaving only the deformed guardrail. We once again went through
Hotitika, where at Nick's request, we stopped by Hotitika Gorge once more. After that, we headed into town and ate at a local bar. Nick ordered the nachoes, which
were substantially improved from his previous... experiences.

We headed south from Hotitika, where the traffic decreased significantly. The stopped by a bush walk, which was a pleasant jaunt through the forest to the beach. From
there, we continued south largely without interruption, and passed many vehicles (mainly RVs) doing well under the speed limit. We arrived at Franz Josef in the
afternoon, and visited the Kiwi sanctuary. The kiwis in the "nocturnal room" were quite active, and we spent some time observing the goofy birds. Afterwards, we headed
back to the room to drink some cider, before heading to dinner a block away, visiting the grocery store (to restock alcohol supplies) and heading back to the room
to relax.
