Our room in Queenstown had no external windows, and was quite dark, which aided sleep. Unfortunately, both Nick and Jen's allergies bothered them rather severely in Queenstown,
so their quality of sleep was somewhat limited. We awoke early, and headed to our planned climbing excursion, which was up a road with a very impressive (20%?) grade. Eventually
arriving at the agreed meeting place, eventually a man using a cane pulled up and introduced himself. He was our intended guide, who had been injured yesterday by a loose rock,
and our climb was cancelled. Somewhat disappointed, we mollified ourselves with a round of mini-golf at Caddyshack, the same chain that we had visited years ago in Christchurch.
The course was excellent, and after a complete 18 holes that featured a mock rocket launch as well as a ball ski-lift, Nick and I tied at exactly 87 strokes each. Jen had several
holes in which she did rather poorly, and thus was well behind either of us.
We headed back to the hotel to do laundry, and while we did that, Nick went for a run. Also, I looked into activities for tomorrow, and booked up an offroading-wine tour execursion
for the following afternoon. Once Nick had returned and bathed, and the laundry was done, Nick and I set out for lunch, leaving Jen to download our GoPro pictures. We headed to a
Tex-Mex restaurant which was actually pretty good, and brought back some enchiladas for Jen. once that was dealt with and the GoPro ready to record our next adventure, we took the
Gondola up to the Skyline Lodge on the hill/mountain behind our hotel, and took a few races in the luge. I eventually got the GoPro mounted and recorded one run down... the expert
track was definitely the most fun, as it involved much less dodging children who had decided to stop on the track. After we got a drink and took a look at the gift shop, we headed
back down the mountain.
At the base, Nick decided to visit the local kiwi bird sanctuary, so we took our leave of him and went into town looking for GoPro accessories, in particular, a flotation mount in
preparation for our upcoming kayaking in Milford Sound. After several stores, we eventually located the float, and took it home and mounted it to our GoPro. Nick rejoined us,
and we set out for dinner. Nick was craving steak, but the steak house we came across was completely booked for the night. Instead, we stopped at a place called Surreal, which had
a reasonable assortment of food (I had the Ribeye) but seemed to be out of a distressing number of things, from food, to drink, to desserts. From there, we headed back to the apartment,
in spite of still being light, it was already 9 pm. Once there, everyone was relatively eager to go to bed, Nick wanted to get an early start for his solo ascent of Ben Lomond tomorrow.
