This morning, we took things relatively easy, heading down to Joe's Garage for breakfast, while Nick went to go up Ben Lomond. He ended up not quite getting to the saddle, as once
he was beyond the treeline, he didn't greatly want to continue, as he was still recovering from his burns, and had not brought sunscreen. He commented that the Douglas Fur forest on the
side of the mountain was so thick that in the morning he almost had to take out his cell phone to use the light. We had previously scheduled a wine and offroading tour for myself and
Jen, which started after 1 pm. Prior to that, we visited the town botanical gardens. After just a bit of snacking for lunch, we headed out on that while Nick relaxed.
The tour took us down several streams, and to a few of the locations used in filming the LOTR movies. We saw the ford that was used in the first movie (Well, both locations that were
used for it, they were composited together) as well as the river that featured prominently towards the end of the first movie. After that, we headed through Arrowtown, which was an old
goldmining community, and to the first vinyard, called Peregrine. There we tasted a number of mines, and acquired two bottles for later use. Our tour companions were not much for wine,
which was rather strange for people who had signed up for a wine tour, but really, that just left myself and my wife to sample everything. Our driver, Pete, was quite knowledgable and
had been in town for several of the movie shoots.
After returning from the tour, we met Nick to go play frisbee golf. Neither myself or Nick had played, but the course at the botanical gardens seemed simple enough, but was significantly
complicated by two factors: The wind off the lake was extreme, and the entire course was basically on the side of a hill. After 4 holes, around 40 throws each, and my wife tumbling down
the hillside, we decided to call it a game. As we wandered back into town, we stopped at an Irish pub, where we had dinner. In particular, I had one of their stone grilled beef entrees,
which you cook at the table and was quite delicious. Miraculously, I didn't burn myself on the stone, although our waiter wasn't quite as lucky when bringing out someone else's order.
We returned to our apartment for the night and polished off the last of our (non-wine) alcohol stores.
