January 10th, 2016 I awoke early, of course, because I was worrying about the alarm being set, or some such nightmare. We cooked the last of our breakfast supplies, and set out. To complicate matters, we also had only about a quarter tank of gas, and did not have the time to fill it, even if we could find a station open (There were automated 24 hour pumps, but they accepted only chip-and-pin CCs, which we didn't have.) We arrived at the ferry terminal only a few minutes before boarding. For our tour, we first took one ferry across Lake Manapouri, then a bus over the land for some ways, and finally got on a second ship for the cruise to Doubtful Sound (Which was actually a fjord.) The weather was semi-cooperative, and I spent a fair amount of time on the above deck. Our cruise turned back near the open ocean, as chop picked up considerably. Still, the overall weather was pleasant enough no one seemed in any real danger of getting sea-sick. Our bus ride back across the pass was somewhat slow, as we had to stall for the ferry. We made several scenic stops, which were nice, but each time we picked up additional sandflies, which were quite abundant here. They seemed to prefer Jen, apparently I'm not nearly as tasty. When we reached the ferry terminal once more, I noticed that in one of the lights, there were piles of dead sandflies up to about half an inch deep! The trip back across the lake went fine, and it was a short trip to our hotel in Te Anau. Jen and I were wiped out from the early morning wake-up, but Nick still had some energy, so he set out to play some minigolf and visit the local Chicken 'N' Chips joint. After he returned, we picked up some lamb and cooked it along with most of our remaining potatoes. We then turned in for a night we could all sleep in for.
