January 11th, 2016 A reasonably night's sleep later, we awoke, packed, and started our trip back to the east coast of the South Island. Before we left Te Anau, we went to a locally recommended pie store, where I got the steak and kidney savory pie, which was delicious. The local sparrows were extremely brave (and/or hungry) and would come right up to us to steal crumbs. The drive was through rolling hills and agricultural land, and consumed much of the day. Around lunch, we stopped at the lighthouse at Nugget Point. The lighthouse was more of a "Lightshack" as Jen termed it, but the scenery around it was incredibly pretty. After that, we headed towards Dunedin, the largest city in that particular area. Dunedin functioned mainly as a port city, and although it had a reasonable downtown, we didn't really find anywhere we wanted to eat driving through it. Combined with our concern about arriving in Oamaru in time for our final excursion, we simply went right on through. Beyond Dunedin, we found a small town with a restaurant called "The Fish Inn" where we had some very delicious fish and chips. Later that afternoon, we arrived in Oamaru and checked into our hotel. I saw an advertisement for some local NZ whiskey, which I tried to go and find, but the local liquormart didn't sell it, and they closed too early for me to go there myself. Our final excursion was a Penguin viewing, which was at 9 am, as the sun was beginning to set. It was a bit of a walk (1.4 miles each way) but we went over a bit early to get a bite to eat, and found the city and streets almost entirely empty by 7 pm. The penguins (blue penguins) had been running late in past days, and this night was no exception. The finally showed up after 10, and the procession in was prett adorable. They came in in waves, and we didn't depart until around 11 pm.
