Jen's Account of the Day

We started the morning off with the complimentary breakfast which was...well...free. The hotel we stayed in (and whose stationary this was originally written on) is in one of several Victorian buildings still standing in Eureka. It is also apparently home to some of the best remaining examples of Italiante architecture. Who knew? The building was amazing, but dark; I don't think we got any good pictures.

After briefly visiting Fort Humboldt, which was mainly a logging exhibit (just good ole Americans making an honest living!), we continued north to Crescent City. On the way we stopped at a few beaches and the appropriately named Fern Canyon in one of the Humboldt State Parks (Lagoon, I think).

Construction slowed our progress considerably and we were pretty hungry by the time we reached Crescent City. We stopped at a decent Mexican restaurant and drove down to the town lighthouse. We didn't go in, but the view from the island, which is only accessible at low tide on foot, had a great view of the harbor. Crescent City is the first place I think we've seen people actually in the water. There's a nice jetty-protected beach here. It beeps. A lot. Like an answering machine every few seconds. Yes, you can hear it from inside our hotel.

Actually, it's a motel, supposedly made from a single redwood tree. I'm skeptical. Anyway, it's a mid-century modern design, complete with mid-century plumbing. The toilet makes weird noises. We have a (flat screen) TV but no fridge.

Time for dinner. The Mexican restaurant we went to was the second-best restaurant in Crescent City according to Trip Advisor. I guess that leaves just one option left...

The Chartroom was an excellent seafood restaurant (and absolutely packed). Even the seals agreed; there was a ton of them parked (loudly) a few feet offshore. You could occasionally hear them from our hotel room some ways away, on the inland side of the highway. They turned the beep off after dark, mercifully, though that makes me wonder why it's on to begin with....
